Sewing Machines and Cosine Curves

Earlier this week, Becca asked (through me) if she could use Kira's sewing machine. When she came over today, we discovered that though we had a sewing machine, we had no idea where the thread was. After phone calls to Kira, and tons of instruction from Mom, we finally got started making a skirt. The skirt was supposed to have a gathered effect at the top, but along the way I realized that with the amount of fabric we had, it was going to be pretty poofy. Upon finally finishing it, Becca thought it was a little too poofy, definitely more than she thought it would be. She wanted to alter it in a way I foresaw not working the way she hoped, and this is how I (in what I considered to be a very Gregory way) tried to explain it to her:

This is a cosine curve. I tried to show her that just by cutting off the stuff beyond 3/2 or -3/2 π won't change any other part of the curve. She thought I was just crazy since this is how I see problems in my mind. The modifications turned out okay. So, I have officially completed my first lone sewing project!!!
